
Last week we shared the best expert tips for running the Chicago Marathon.
But this week, we wanted to flip the script. Instead of just hearing from coaches and pros, we asked you — the everyday runners who’ve trained, toed the line, and crossed that finish on Columbus Drive.
Because who better to learn from than the people who have been in your shoes (literally)?

From the little things no race guide tells you, to the lessons that only reveal themselves after 26.2 miles through the Windy City, here are the responses we got when we asked the question:
“What is something you wish you had known before you ran the Chicago Marathon?”

One common refrain was a warning about the Chicago weather.
- “Wear lots of layers — throwaway layers. You’ll be cold waiting for the race to start.”
- “Train for all types of weather- Chicago Marathon weather is a crapshoot!”
- “Be prepared for extreme cold and extreme heat.”
- “Bring a poncho in case it’s raining before the start. Amazon sells multi-packs for cheap!”
Other advice centered around race day logistics, like the crowded start or a post-race meeting spot.
- “Be patient. It may feel like the crowded start of the race will never let up, but it does and you’ll (eventually) get some space and room to breathe.”
- “The first turn in the race is a left turn, so if you can, start the race on the lefthand side of the course.”
- “If you’re meeting up with friends/family after the race, pick a spot to meet that isn’t right at the finish line, which will be super crowded.”

As far as staying motivated during the race, we got the following (sometimes conflicting) tips 😉
- “If you’re feeling low energy, grab a high five from a spectator. It helps, trust me.”
- “Write your name on your shirt so that the spectators can cheer for you by name.”
- “This may sound crazy, but my advice is DON’T put your name on your shirt. This way you’ll know when it’s the actual people who know you cheering for you as you pass by!”
- “Don’t be disappointed if you won’t have anyone cheering you on personally. This is one race where the crowds are INCREDIBLE and their support will carry you through the tough parts.”
Of course, the best advice is to prepare yourself as best you can for the course on race day…
- “If you’re feeling nervous or it’s your first marathon, running part of the course beforehand can help ease your nerves. Of course if you don’t live close enough to do that, you can simulate the Chicago course with the RunBetter App on your treadmill!”
